THE HISTORY AND BENEFITS OF PILATES

Pilates helps your body to move better in every way using low-impact, slow and controlled muscular endurance movements. These stretch, strengthen and align the body with a focus on stabilising your core and conditioning the deeper, supporting muscles of your body to improve posture, balance and coordination.

Founded by Joseph Pilates, the Pilates method was built following his childhood of health complications which drove him to become stronger and more flexible to overcome these. He went on to compete competitively in gymnastics, diving and skiing and working as a circus performer, boxer and self defence instructor in later years.

During the First World War, Pilates worked in a hospital supporting patients that were unable to walk, using bed springs that he attached to beds to support limbs and rehabilitation. This lead to the development of his famous pilates equipment ‘the Cadillac’.

The combination of his fitness background and rehab work led to the development and foundations of his Pilates method. In the 1920s, Pilates emigrated to the USA where he taught pilates in his own gym, particularly helping injured athletes and dancers safely return to exercise and maintain their fitness. The method quickly grew in popularity with many celebrities attending the gym, and originally, 60% of their clientele were men! Since then, Pilates has been adopted worldwide as an effective and accessible form of exercise for many.

In pilates, the quality of each posture is more important than the number of repetitions or how energetically you can move, there is limited sweating and straining required, which is why it is so popular; from elite athletes to people with limited mobility, pregnant women and people with lower fitness levels.

Although Pilates is a low-impact form of exercise, certain people may need to seek professional advice ahead of starting, which is why we ask all attendees to complete our PAR-Q form which highlights any health issues before participating in a class with us.

FAQs

WHAT TIME OF DAY DO YOU RECOMMEND?

We find the best days for classes are usually Tuesday and Wednesday, as these are often the busiest days in offices with flexible workers. We also provide and manage a 'Class Time Pulse Survey' if you would like to ask your employees about their preferred class time.

DO I NEED TO INVEST IN A LOT OF EQUIPMENT?

For Pilates, all you need is mats! To assist you with the ordering process we provide you with our Mat Buying Guide to make this as easy as possible. We also have partnerships with companies to ensure you get the best price when buying equipment in bulk.

HOW DO WE ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO ATTEND?

Our ready-made promotional media pack sets your classes up for success! Complete with printable posters, email marketing, graphics for office screens or social media, as well as other collateral that can be easily added to existing newsletters, company apps or your intranet. Access to the media pack is available as soon as your pilates classes are signed off. All we need is your company logo and a few class details to get started!

we don't have a studio, where can we run sessions?

The majority of our fitness classes take place in offices or meeting rooms, so you don’t need a dedicated fitness studio to get started, just a suitable space and a cupboard to store your mats! Before classes begin, we will visit your office to carry out a risk assessment to ensure the space works.

DO WE NEED TO SIGN UP TO A YEARS WORTH OF CLASSES?

No! we allow you to cancel with 1 month's notice if you are not happy with the sessions and feel we enough has been done to promote the classes internally. If you ever need to cancel a class we operate a 48 hour cancellation policy, so if the class is cancelled with 48+ hours notice, you will not be charged for the session.

CAN WE CHANGE CLASSES IF WE FEEL LIKE it ISN'T THE RIGHT FOR US?

We have close contact with our large network and team of 60 + fitness instructors, with multiple pilates teachers if you’re enjoying the class but feel like the chemistry isn't quite right. If you fancy mixing up the style of class, we offer a variety of options from yoga, HIIT and boxing to running and ju-jitsu to name a few!

can we stream it for remote workers?

It is possible depending on the room setup, however from a user experience perspective, we find giving remote workers, and those within different time zones, access to our pre-recorded workouts a more popular option, allowing them to fit in classes as they wish around their working day.

WE HAVE A WIDE VARIETY OF AGES, ABILITIES AND EVEN SOME PREGNANT PEOPLE - CAN THIS BE ACCOMODATED?

Absolutely! Each of our classes is designed to be accessible for all abilities, with modifications available for both injuries and pregnancy. Ahead of starting classes with us, all attendees are required to complete our PAR-Q safety form so the instructors are aware of any injuries or restrictions they need to accommodate.

HOW DO WE MANAGE BOOKINGS?

We are able to provide access to a personalised booking system, free of charge, which allows classes to be booked up to 30 days in advance. These bookings are linked to a shared document between yourself and our Community Manager to track interest and attendance.

WE DON'T HAVE ACCESS TO SHOWERS - IS THIS A MUST?

In pilates, the quality of each posture is more important than the number of repetitions or how energetically you can move, there is limited sweating and straining required, which is why it is so well suited to the workspace. Our instructors will also provide modifications to make the exercises more or less challenging so individuals can decide what kind of workout they want to do. If you are looking for a more intense session, the class can be scheduled after work so teams can head straight home when they finish!
